Tina and Jerry Moss, long-time patrons of The Music Center, gifted $25 million dollars in 2020 to help support the cultivation of strong arts and culture-focused partnerships and new programming initiatives at the county’s performing arts center. The Music Center’s three original venues on its campus are united by an expansive outdoor area, which is now named Jerry Moss Plaza.
Live at The Music Center: Concert Celebrating Jerry Moss, Co-Founder of A&M Records musical performances will showcase the most celebrated songs produced under Moss’s guidance, in addition to stories and visuals illustrating and evoking the spirit and legacy of A&M Records, fostered by the music mogul and his business partner and A&M Records co-founder, Herb Alpert. Moss helped make the company the epicenter of the music business in Los Angeles for decades; the evening will spotlight his commitment to identifying highly talented artists and providing them with the artistic freedom and support to advance their careers.
“Jerry Moss has always been a music lover first. If it weren’t for him, Humble Pie and my own solo career might never have happened,” said Peter Frampton. “Jerry has been a champion of mine my entire life and I treasure our friendship.”
“My first awareness of A&M Records was seeing the iconic logo on the inside of a Carole King record. A&M Records was known by all to be the ‘artists’ label’ and it was a dream come true when they signed me,” said Amy Grant. “In getting to know Jerry Moss over the years, I was amazed by the breadth of his interests. Whether it was music, horse racing or trekking through Africa, excellence defined everything in which he invested his talents and passions.”
Rachel S. Moore, Music Center president and CEO, added “Jerry Moss is one of the most iconic and pioneering figures in the recording industry. Alongside his A&M Records partner Herb Alpert, Jerry influenced the world by cultivating some of the most successful performers across all music genres, and we are thrilled to welcome some of those legendary musicians to our stage. This one-of-a-kind concert, which was slated for earlier this year, only to be upended by the pandemic, is worth the wait. This incredible celebration for Jerry will be the toast of the town!”
Best known for being the co-founder of A&M Records in 1962, along with trumpeter and bandleader Herb Alpert, Moss has had a successful career as a record executive for more than 60 years. Creating A&M Records from humble beginnings in a garage, Moss and Alpert launched the company with a handshake and an investment of $200 from both men; they turned the company into one of the most influential music makers of the century. Over 25 years, A&M grew into the largest independent record label in the world as it championed the art of the artist and greatly valued indisputable and genuine talent. A&M signed many of the industry’s most successful musical artists, including The Police, The Carpenters, Janet Jackson, Carole King, Joe Cocker and Peter Frampton, among many others.
After selling A&M records to Polygram in 1989, Moss and Alpert formed Almo Sounds. Moss serves as chairman of both Almo Sounds and Rondor Music Inc., a music publishing company, which has held over 65,000 songs, many of which are considered timeless classics in the industry. Both Moss and Alpert were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 as nonperformers.
