EVENT DATES: SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, OCTOBER 8 – 9
Highlights Include CicLAvia’s Specially-Designated ‘Heart of L.A.’ Bike Route and Live Performances by Tolliver, Boogaloo Assassins and Las Cafeteras
LOS ANGELES (September 15, 2022)— Grand Park, powered by The Music Center, celebrates its yearlong 10th anniversary with a spectacular two-day festival for the entire family filled with live music performances, innovative art installations, wellness workshops and activities and more. The weekend celebration, October 8 – 9, 2022, highlights the signature free events that laid the foundation over the past decade for Grand Park to become L.A.’s central gathering place and honors the legacy of performers, artists, community partners, audiences and parkgoers who helped to shape Grand Park as the park for everyone.
Originally conceived as a dynamic cultural and global crossroads, Grand Park has become an authentic space that demonstrates what it means to be a reflection of one of the most diverse, dynamic and complex counties in the nation. Over the past 10 years, this vision has become a reality, with the park honoring the creativity and identity of Angelenos through its free year-round programming rooted in hometown pride.
On Saturday, October 8, from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m., Grand Park will host an evening concert featuring live performances by longtime global music artists and partners who have filled Grand Park with their unique sounds over the past 10 years. Hosted by Anthony Valadez and Novena Carmel, the four-hour music fest includes performances by Tolliver, Boogaloo Assassins and Las Cafeteras. Concertgoers can purchase culinary delights and beverages from some of L.A.’s favorite food trucks.
On Sunday, October 9, from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Grand Park presents a Family Festival and spotlights the dedicated community partners, non-profit organizations and local businesses it has worked with to raise awareness for and exemplify the power of creative expression during the past decade. All Angelenos are invited to engage in the free family-friendly activities, among them:
- 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.: CicLAvia Heart of L.A.
A trek around Grand Park and surrounding neighborhoods to engage car-free public spaces and promote good health. When Grand Park opened in 2012, its opening weekend activities included CicLAvia’s fifth Heart of L.A. which Angelenos have connected with Grand Park each year through this annual route. - 9:00 a.m. – Noon: The Oasis at Grand Park
The Tree Yoga Cooperative will nourish our connection to self and community through a series of holistic body-centered wellness offerings that bridges the Grand Park community to a healing oasis experience. Local body, mind and cultural practitioners will offer an uplifting experience that honors historical reflection, relationships, and an enlightened future in whole body wellness rooted in local and ancestral cultural knowledge. - Noon – 4:00 p.m.: The Grand Garden at Grand Park
Live performances, music, dance, art installations, arts and crafts, pop-up shops and special family and children activities hosted in partnership with Streetlet. - 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.: Movement Stories
Fun and immersive theater storytelling through movement-based experiences, which incorporates live music, dancers and members of our various communities, led by Cornerstone Theater Company and CONTRA-TIEMPO Activist Dance Theater. Celebrate what we do in our lives every day by telling stories using our voices and our bodies!
Grand Park’s two-day celebration also will feature an expanded version of an interactive art installation House of Words by Jimenez Lai (which debuted at Grand Park’s 4th of July Block Party), produced in partnership with NOW ART LA. The installation includes a live acoustic composition and special performance by Morgan Sorne and a video montage by Nany Cárdenas honoring Grand Park’s 10th anniversary.
“The myriad of events we have planned for Grand Park’s 10th anniversary exemplifies the strength and vibrancy of L.A.’s connectedness to its rich and diverse histories. During the past decade, Grand Park joined forces with more than 250 community and county partners, as well as more than 1,000 artists, to enrich and entertain millions of parkgoers through joyful, unique and unforgettable experiences,” said Grand Park Director Julia Diamond. “As a result, Grand Park has evolved as the park for everyone, a central gathering space where Angelenos come to be themselves and connect with each other. Join us to celebrate the park’s past, present and future!”
When the first two blocks of the 12-acre park were opened on July 26, 2012, Grand Park immediately transformed an underutilized, neglected and unknown piece of real estate plagued by grade changes, limited street visibility, and practical but visually unappealing garage access ramps into Los Angeles’ central gathering space. Now, more than one million Angelenos visit the park annually to enjoy its multiple lawns, gardens and stages and experience cultural, community and civic events, festivals, holiday celebrations, outdoor health and wellness activities and more. The third and fourth blocks of the park opened on October 6, 2012, completing a 12-year planning process.
“Grand Park has emerged as a leader among urban parks in the nation by using arts and culture programming as an equity and bridge-building tool,” said Rachel S. Moore, president and CEO of The Music Center. “Over the past ten years, Grand Park has become a unique and critical safe space for Angelenos to foster connections between generations and empower individuals whose voices deserve to be uplifted. Congratulations to Grand Park’s 10th year of recognizing, unleashing and celebrating the creativity—and voices—in all of us, and we thank Los Angeles County for entrusting The Music Center with a long-term lease of 10 years to manage and create exciting programming at this incredible space.”
Following the 10th anniversary weekend celebration, Grand Park will hold a number of additional signature free events, including Grand Park’s Downtown Día de los Muertos (October 22 – November 2) and Grand Park's NYELA (December 31), each of which will acknowledge the anniversary.
