In addition to the thrilling performances on stage, the Music Center Spotlight Awards program also supports outstanding high school students in the Visual Arts. The Spotlight Awards Two-Dimensional Art Competition, launched in 1996, and the Photography Competition, which began in 1999, offers young artists and photographers the opportunity to have their work reviewed by a panel of arts professionals, prominent artists, and leading professional photographers. These outstanding artists review all the student submissions and select fifteen semifinalists in each Visual Arts category. The works of all the semifinalists are shown at a special awards reception in a prominent Southern California gallery.
All applicants are offered private museum tours and special art workshops conducted by noted professionals. Many past winners in the Visual Arts have gone on to attend major arts institutions, including Art Center College of Design, Otis College of Art and Design, and the Cooper Union School of Visual Arts.
