  • Be prepared to present two pieces
  • Each composition must not be longer than 3 minutes. The fact that you do not play a piece in its entirety will not be held against you in judging
  • Repertoire must include at least one jazz standard. The second composition may be anything of your choosing within the jazz genre and may be an original composition
  • The two pieces must be contrasting in nature (different tempos, different forms, etc.)
  • You must include improvisation in your performance
  • A back-up accompanist is required. Your back-up support should include one to three additional musicians
  • Backing tracks, such as the Aebersold tracks, are permitted. The backing tracks must not have more than three musicians; big band backing tracks are not allowed
  • Check out the Judges’ Tips section in the Quicklinks to see what the judges are looking for in your audition
